“Tourist Fa:lls from Cable Car in China After Strong Winds Force Door Open”
A female tourist in China experienced a terrifying fall from a cable car after strong winds caused the door to spring open, sending her plummeting 10 meters to the ground. The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Yandangshan Scenic Area, a popular tourist destination located south of Shanghai in Zhejiang province.
The woman was aboard a yellow cable car when it tilted steeply in the high winds.
As the gondola swayed, the door unexpectedly opened, and she fell out while it was still in motion. Fortunately, staff members were quick to respond and rushed to assist the injured woman, who was later taken to a nearby hospital. She was reported to have sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the incident, the cable car service was temporarily suspended for safety checks.
Investigations revealed that a strong gust of wind had triggered a technical malfunction, causing the door to open just after the gondola left the substation. The yellow cable car bore the words “Welcome to Yandang Mountain Cableway” in Chinese characters on the window, making it easily identifiable.
A bystander, who appeared to be seated next to the open door, was seen making a phone call to report the fall, as authorities began responding to the emergency. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, and the cable car service resumed operations after thorough safety inspections.
A Scenic and Cultural Landmark: Yandang Mountain
The Yandangshan Scenic Area, located in Yueqing, Wenzhou, is one of China’s most famous tourist attractions. Often referred to as the “number one mountain in the southeast,” Yandang Mountain is a renowned geological park and holds a prestigious 5A scenic rating—the highest in China.
The area is home to over 550 scenic sites, including famous landmarks like the Lingfeng, Lingyan, and Dalongjing peaks, collectively known as the “three sacred peaks.” Yandang Mountain has also served as a backdrop for several iconic films, including the martial arts epic The Legend of the Condor Heroes.
As investigations into the cable car incident continue, authorities are working to ensure that safety measures are further enhanced to prevent future accidents. Yandang Mountain remains a top destination for tourists seeking breathtaking views and cultural experiences, but this incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks that come with extreme weather conditions in scenic areas.
