A couple were left stunned after pulling up an old carpet in their home and finding a huge Monopoly board sketched on the floor. The popular game board had been painted onto the floor years earlier by previous owners.
The current homeowners took a photo of the board, which features the popular London properties and rail stations from the family-favourite game.
It even has the community chest, chance and a jail.
The discovery was an unexpected surprise by the couple, and was shared online by their son-in-law.
Taking to Reddit, he wrote: “While tearing up their carpet, my in-laws found a giant monopoly board.”
His post has racked up more than 8,200 upvotes and almost 2,000 comments.
Someone suggested there could be a whole street with hidden boardgames painted on the floorboards:
“Showed this to my wife, and she reminded me that there’s a whole neighborhood near us, built in the mid-50s, that has game boards painted or tiled onto their basement floors. Seems to have been a selling point or something.”
“Imagine getting the house that has Giant Mousetrap,” another user replied.
It turns out that massive floor games were once popular decades ago, The giant board had the same layout as traditional Monopoly, including Jail, Chance and Community Chest squares. The streets and stations having names like Connecticut Avenue, Vermont Avenue and Reading Railroad indicate this is the US version of the game.
One Reddit user wrote: “It was a style for playrooms back in the day.”
A third commented: “I’ll never forget always wanting one of these when I was younger.”
Many people said the couple should try and keep the Monopoly board as their floor, and the son-in-law admitted he was trying to convince them.
One said: “I hope they keep it!”
The son-in-law said: “Trying to convince them to cover it in epoxy and do the rest of the flooring around it how they originally wanted.”
Someone asked the original Redditor if finding the Monopoly board changed his in-laws’ renovation plans, adding, “I hope so, think of the grandchildren.”
