Freddie and Sarah met while filming I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997. The couple got married in 2002 and have been together ever since — for 21 years. The photo above shows them when they were just dating.
Prinze and Gellar first announced their engagement at the Buffy star’s 24th birthday party. Their relatively young age was quickly scrutinized in an interview with Howard Stern, who 25 years on must be eating his words.
“So you will marry Sarah Michelle Gellar even though you know that it won’t last?” Stern asked Prinze boldly, to which he immediately quipped back: “Oh, absolutely it will last.”
In 2020, Prinze told People Now that neither one of them “were into marriage,” but one day he “just knew” they were going to be wed.
On September 1, 2002, the couple tied the knot in a remote clifftop ceremony at the El Careyes resort in Mexico.
Sarah Michelle Gellar And Freddie Prinze Jr share two kids together, a daughter, Charlotte, and son, Rocky. Following their nuptials the couple spent the next seven years focusing on their careers, including their famed joint appearance in the Scooby Doo films. It wasn’t until 2009 that the couple welcomed their first daughter, Charlotte Grace Prinze, on September 19th.
Months after the happy arrival, the couple spoke to People about their decision to wait to have kids and becoming new parents.
“Becoming a parent is the most selfless act, and you need to be at a point in your life where you can give up anything and everything for a child,” Gellar explained. “I don’t know if you know how to do that when you’re in your 20s.”
Prinze added, “I’m so happy we didn’t have kids in our 20s—I just didn’t know a thing. You have so much more patience in your 30s, and I feel like I appreciate this so much more.”
Three years later, almost to the date, Gellar and Prinze welcomed their second child, a baby boy, Rocky James, on September 20th, 2012.
Gellar recently shared a sweet throwback to celebrate Rocky’s 7th birthday, recalling the day he was born.
“And just when I thought it wasn’t possible to love another human the way I loved my daughter, seven years ago today, my son was born, and I learned that was not the case,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “ Rocky on the day you were born, I swear my heart tripled in size. Your laugh is the only medicine I will ever need, and your excitement for life is my motivation.”
